Each insurance company has different requirements and if you chose to have weight loss surgery, your surgeon's office will review those requirements with you. As a standard, if your BMI is over 40, your insurance will cover you. Or, if you are like me and have a BMI greater than 35, but have other co-morbidities, such as elevated blood pressure, high cholesterol, pre-diabetes, diabetes, sleep apnea, or other illnesses caused by obesity, such as osteoarthritis, your insurance company may cover you.
If you're weight is in the purple range, your BMI is 40 or greater. If your weight is in the red range, your insurance may cover weight loss surgery, if you have other co-morbidities.
What I found interesting is that my insurance offered to cover the procedure in less than two weeks, which is clearly an indication that they anticipated my health care expenses for other illnesses would cost a lot more than having the surgery (examples: medications, joint replacements, risk of stroke and cardiac issues).
